    Oryx

During the early seventies, ninety-three South African Oryx (Gemsbok) were introduced onto the 3,200 square mile White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in the Tularosa Basin of New Mexico.  This area proved to be an ideal habitat for the African native oryx.

Not long after introduction, "huntable" populations were established. As the common saying goes oryx “breed like rabbits on speed.”  In the thirty years since their introduction, oryx have become the most numerous ungulate in the Chihuahuan desert system of New Mexico, with over 15,000 animals harvested since hunting began.

Currently the population has spread beyond the borders of the missile range, providing hunters with additional opportunities to harvest one of these exotic animals.  It is estimated that the current oryx population in New Mexico is 2,500 to 3,000 animals.  Unlike Texas, New Mexico oryx are 100% wild, free-range animals.

At Southwestern New Mexico Trophy Hunts and Properties, we have arguably the highest success rate for harvesting trophy class oryx than any other outfitter in the state.  We have positive working relationships with WSMR hunt facilitators and are well versed in the extensive security protocols required to hunt on base.  We typically put our clients up in a hotel in the nearest town for these hunts, but are happy to work with any specific requests.  Please contact us for additional information.
